Book review: "Ethics of Big Data". Balancing Risk and Innovation

This book provides early thoughts to be considered while implementing Big Data initiatives in any organization.  Authors did a great job explaining ethical issues about possible uses of data  from customers/patients/citizens which can be easily understood by technical and non-technical people involved in any Big Data project.

Davis and Patterson argue that Identity, Privacy, Ownership and Reputation are the elements required to define a framework for Big Data ethics.  I agree with them that those elements help balancing between "risks and benefits of the innovations that big data can provide."

Additionally, this book describes the Alignment Methodology Framework as the tool provided to help you align values and actions of any  organization. It is composed of four components: Inquiry, Analysis, Articulation and Action.

In general, I think this book is an early exercise of the different kind of issues regarding the use and abuse of huge amount of data already available for public and private enterprises/organizations/institutions. It is recommended for people involved in designing any big data project.

"The Past, Present and Future of Javascript" by Axel Rauschmayern; O’Reilly Media

Summary: If you want to know the origins and future of the Javascript language, you should read it.

Dr. Axel Rauschmayern is a consultant and trainer for Javascript, web technologies, and information management. In this report, he examines the Javascript programming language from three different angles: The Past, The Present and The Future.

I liked the approach took by the author in order to review the current status of Javascript. In particular, i think The Future part is the best part of the article. It is well documented and includes description of new features which Ecma's TC39 (Technical Commitee 39) is designing for upcoming versions of this popular programming language. The Past part gives you an overview of Javascript origins and describes relevant milestones of it.

On the other side, The Present part seems incomplete or unfinished to me,  because it lacks a revision of current Javascript frameworks used for developing web applications such as Sencha ExtJS, Backbone.js, batman.js, knockout or Meteor.

No Line On The Horizon

Cuatro años después del "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb", finalmente llega el nuevo album de U2 "No Line On The Horizon". Su primer sencillo "Get on Your Boots" no es tan bueno como "Vertigo", sin embargo, tengo la esperanza de que el album completo sea tan bueno como uno esperaría de una de las mejores bandas de rock.

Goliza histórica del Pumas

No puedo dejar pasar la oportunidad de mencionar la goliza que propino el Pumas de la UNAM a los Tiburones del Veracruz ayer en el estadio olímpico de CU. Tengo entendido que es histórico, ya que no existe registro de un marcador con 8 goles diferencia desde el inicio de los torneos cortos del futból mexicano.

Un rotundo 8-0 habla por sí solo. Los goles fueron anotados por: Esteban Solari (3), Pablo Barrera (2), Ignacio Scocco (2) y Leandro Augusto.

Enseñanzas de un emprendedor

Business Pundit hizo un post sobre su experiencia como emprendedor y comparte varias enseñanzas. Considero importante varios de los puntos que menciona sobre todo el tema de entrenarse para ser emprendedor y de estar preparado para aceptar el fracaso. Ya había contemplado la idea de comenzar un pequeño negocio lateral y aprender de negocios, ahora estoy más convencido de que lo debo hacer, para aprender un área que desconozco y a la que no he estado expuesto en mi vida profesional.
